A hike to the top of Grintovec, the highest peak of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, at 2558 meters. Starting from the v Koncu parking at the very end of the Kamnik Bistrica valley, passing the Cojzova koča (Cojzova Hut) at Kokrsko sedlo, then to the Grintovec peak, and back the same way.
I arrived at the parking at 05:40 on Thursday morning. The parking lot was completely empty. I assume it was the combination of it being a workday and a not so great weather forecast why no one else was there. But the weather was predicted to be fine until 11:00, so I did not waste any time and got started on the path to Grintovec.
Note that this parking is not accessible during winter, the road leading here is then closed.
I followed the well marked path from the parking lot to Cojzova koča na Kokrskem sedlu, the hut in the Kokrsko saddle, that connects Grintovec to Kalški greben. The path starts foresty but opens up completely near the hut. It took around 2 hours to get to the hut.
I could see some people inside the hut and I knew it was open, but given the iffy weather forecast I decided to push on towards Grintovec without much of a break.
A short steep section leading away from the hut was followed by a longer relatively flat path with beautiful views. The weather was holding up great. The last 2 kilometers to the top were pretty steep again, and it was on this part that I finally saw another hiker this day. Just before the top was another group just making their way back down.
Reaching the top was a great feeling, of accomplishment and relief. This was physically the hardest hike I have done so far, and it felt like that too. I was slightly ahead of schedule, with the weather still looking fine, some clouds rolling in. I spent 15 minutes enjoying the summit, it felt like I had the whole mountain to myself. It was way warmer than I expected so the gloves and hat I brought stayed in my backpack.
The descent started fine. I met 2 hikers on their way up close to the top, stopped for a quick chat. An hour later the descent started to get tiring, and I was happy when I made it back to the hut. I got myself a drink there and sat down for a longer break. When I felt somewhat recharged I continued towards the parking lot. My legs were really complaining near the end, but with regular stops it was not too bad. I could hear some thunders during the last 30 minutes, and felt a couple of drops of rain.
Finally the parking lot came into view, I was happy to see it. I rested some time before driving back home.
