Ratitovec Hike - July 2026

A hike in the Ratitovec mountains of Slovenia visiting the Kosmati Vrh, Gladki Vrh, and Altemaver peaks. A longer route than last time.

Parking

The parking lot was not busy at 6:30 in the morning on Sunday. I later found out there was a road closure due to a rally later in the day, not sure if that's why the parking lot was not busy or if this is normal at this time of the day. The sun was already well above the horizon, it looked to be a beautiful day.

Along the road

Instead of going up the 2 paths I've been on before, I followed the road towards the "backup" parking lot. I continued along that road for 3 kilometers total. It's a bit boring, but I wanted to go this way so I could include the Kosmati Vrh peak in this hike.

To Kosmati Vrh

After 3 kilometers I basically do a 180 degree turn onto this little forest trail that takes me high above the road that I was on and all the way to Kosmati Vrh.

Kosmati Vrh

Kosmati Vrh offered great views of the surroundings, including Triglav and Grintovec, and also my next target for the day: Gladki Vrh.

To Gladki Vrh

A "saddle" about 125 meters below Kosmati Vrh connects it to Gladki Vrh. Some cows cheered me on.

Gladki Vrh

Gladki Vrh sits right above the hut on Ratitovec where you can get food and drinks on the weekends.

To Altemaver

Last time I skipped Altemaver because it was too icy. That was not a problem today, so I finally got to go there for the first time. Altemaver is the highest peak in the Ratitovec mountains at 1678 meters.

Altemaver

I spent quite some time at the Altemaver peak, the clouds, temperature, and gentle breeze made for the most perfect comfortable weather.

Back to the parking

I descended along one of the paths I knew from before. It has these beautiful rock formations on display.

Back at the parking

The parking was almost empty, which I found quite odd, since it was always busy the previous times I returned there from a hike. When I drove down I was worried to see a red/white tape blocking the road. But luckily a friendly "guard" allowed me through since the rally hadn't started yet.
